Subject:Training for 2010

It is that time of the year again gentlemen, where we forget the bumps and bruises we had each Sunday morning – along with the score - dream of embellished heroics, dust off those running shoes and run around the field wishing you did not have that extra mince pie or that extra pint for lunch. It’s PRE-SEASON TRAINING TIME.

Given that our first game is on the Saturday 20th March, this season's training will start Tuesday 19th January, at 6:00pm. For the Props and any other survivors, beer o’clock will be from 8 o’clock; however, this is dependent on how many softies turn up after 6:00 with a poor excuse.

As the roster season is relatively early to start in the year, unit training and general game plan training will need to be underway reasonably soon as 1st semester starts on the 22nd February. Therefore, it is well advised to make it to the start of preseason training where the intensity will not be as much to start with as it will be in following weeks. For those students who will not be back in Hobart until O-week, try to at least work on a combination of endurance fitness as well as sprint work 3 or 4 times a week.

This year is to see a new focus for the Uni Rugby Club, with several Uni players looking promising for positions on the State Colts Side to tour Victoria, it is hoped that the Club will have several players eligible for a University Blue Award: something an rugby player has not received for a number of years at UTAS. Additionally, the Club is determined to send a squad to the Uni Games this year, which can only occur with strong commitment from the beginning of the season (and paying your Subs). Stephen Loxley has said he will be willing to organise the coaching for the 2nd’s team, which will mean that there will be the possibility for everyone to get a game and put pressure on those in the Senior Team. In addition, it would also be more advantages to the club to have a few of the old dogs running on the field with some of the new young pups to provide a guiding force, before the young ones move into the senior team.

Therefore, to I hope to see everyone down at the Uni Rugby Club from 6:00 on Tuesday 19th January 2010, and bring along a few recruits.
